my day in beauty #1: joan loftus
Introducing a brand new series! First to show us a day in her beauty life ... my mum.
I know this newsletter is ostensibly all about me and what I’m up to beauty-wise (it is called Vanity Project, after all), but for a long time, I’ve wanted to find a way to open it up to other people. I’m so nosy about what’s in everybody else’s makeup bags and skincare cabinets, and I’m sure all of you are too.
So, allow me introduce a new series, My Day in Beauty, where I’ll be asking people to take me through their day in beauty products, from the cream they use first in the morning to the last lotion they apply at night.
And who better person to start with than my mother, Joan?
She’s quite literally certified in glamour, as she qualified as a makeup artist during lockdown (one of the many new skills she acquired during that time). Mum has had an immaculate skincare routine for about as long as I can remember, and is probably the only person I know who applies lipstick even if she has no other makeup on. Iconic behaviour.
So, to kick things off, here’s Joan’s day in beauty.
The first product I use in the morning is… Melt the Day Away by Ella & Jo. This is a balm to oil cleanser. I love how it just glides over the skin and leaves it soft and clean! I follow this up with their Hydrating Hyaluronic Serum, Wide Awake Eye Gel, and Plump & Protect Day Cream which contains SPF30.
My everyday makeup routine looks like… I apply Estée Lauder Futurist Hydra Rescue as my go-to daily make up. This to me is like a tinted moisturiser with a very light coverage, but it gives a lovely glow to the skin. However, if I was going somewhere special, I would apply Nars Sheer Glow in the shade Punjab. This is a buildable foundation but still gives a natural-looking finish. I use Charlotte Tilbury Brow Lift pencil to fill in the brows then finish off with a lipstick. My favourite at the moment is Charlotte Tilbury Rocket Girl. This is a nudey-pink shade, so very suitable for my day look.
My hair styling routine is… I use Voduz Cleanse It Repair shampoo and conditioner. I have highlighted my hair for many years now and it is quite dry and brittle. I feel the overall condition of my hair has improved and is lovely and shiny.
I smell like... Chanel! I just love Coco Mademoiselle! So sophisticated and lasts for the day and night.
I can’t leave the house without… my lipsticks! I can have at least three in my handbag at any time. I think it finishes off every look and lightens up every smile. It's even been know to make your teeth look whiter!
I’m always re-applying… my lipstick 💄😀 I love L’Oreal’s Color Riche in Cherry Crystal, Nars Afterglow Balm in Turbo, and Estée Lauder Pure Colour Rouge Longue.
The one part of my routine I will never skip is… removing my make up at night and cleansing my skin! Again, I use Ella & Jo’s Melt the Day Away cleansing balm followed with the serum, eye gel, and Relax & Renew Night Cream.
For a treat, I will… Have a facial and get the deep clean treatment. It's so relaxing and you are getting those few extra steps to get down to the next layer of your skin and hopefully help with a few less lines and wrinkles although at this stage in a mature skin I'm afraid the inevitable is very much visible 😀
The last product I put on at night is… is my Ella & Jo night cream. I feel relaxed and ready for bed and know that my skin is repairing and getting ready for the whole routine all over again in the morning!
Thank you Mum and thank you for reading Vanity Project! I’m hoping to do one of these every couple of posts and would love to feature subscribers, so if you’d like to take me through your day in beauty, do get in touch. See you soon!
